My legbars eggs are not as blue as the ameraucanas. They aren't as green as I remember my EE's eggs being. I only have one blue Paul Smith Ameraucana left and she's just done molting but I will have to compare to be sure. I have a color chart and they range a bit on that. At least one of my younger legbars has started laying. I have 10 young ones that are almost finished feathering out so they won't lay until next spring. I don't think I will keep all ten but not sure who won't make the cut just yet. I am interested in putting a pair on craigslist to see what'll happen.
My first coop only had a bit of insulation. The larger one I built this year will have just a bit but not much. I am wary of the heat lamp for the same reason but it's worked so far with the chicken brooder I put in there this fall to keep the chicks out of the house as I really hate the dust and smell. Even if I clean every day or every other day it's not to my taste.
Their combs are just so big that I don't think there's much that can be done at some point.

are your young ones boys as well as girls?
I use a heat lamp when it gets really cold but I worry all night. I often wake and look out the window to make sure nothing is on fire.

He is a cross breed I got from nhnanna as a chick, back in July. He's been a cutie-pie all along, just as friendly as can be. He's got five toes so probably part silkie, he's also pretty small. After that I'm not sure. Here's a picture of all of him, what a goofy looking fella he is right now. He's about 15 weeks old.

He is a cutie pie. This is I believe my first post, but I love this site. I am in Southern NH, and have 13 hens. 8 are a cross between RIR and Leghorns. They have been laying since they were 19 weeks. The other 5 are pure RIR's and will be 20 weeks this week. I have not gotten any eggs from them at all. Some of their crests have grown, while others haven't changed that much. Anybody know around what age they should start laying.

We are having loads of fun with them. They love treats of pumpkins, cabbages, and spaghetti, and bread. They have even started hopping up to get them.

they start to lay soon after the combs go from pink to red.

I have 17 that are about 4 - 8 weeks old. 10 girls and 7 boys. I also have my 2 original hens, 2 younger pullets (one uncrested) and 1 younger boy with a floppy comb who is way too colorful for my taste or breeding plan. I am contemplating pairing the uncrested female and floppy comb boy for sale on Craigslist but....not sure what I want to do. The girl should be laying soon if not already as I know that at least one of those younger girls is laying....
I secured the lamp to one of the joists in the coop and since both my coops are tall enough for me to stand in it's relatively high off the ground. I made a stand for the booder to sit on inside the coop so everything is far away from the shavings. I think next year I may purchase one of those wire sided coops that TSC sells and build that inside the coop for a brooder. I have one but I use it for a grow out pen or as a rooster bachelor coop.
Did you get your rooster from Blacksheepcardigan? I sold her 3 earlier this year and she made mention that you may have one. If you have pictures could you post or pm me one so I can see what he looks like? I meant to ask her the same but apparently never sent the message though I remember typing it up.
