My 5th egg just hatched .. baby has a tiny opening that looks like where it didnit close completely from being born but no blood coming out of it currently. Its butt is like a big red see through bubble .. is there anything I can do besides wait and see if it makes it ? I do not know if anyone else has posted about this before and was afraid to scroll through without going ahead and asking for help !!! Any ideas suggestions appreciated !!!

Just for future reference if anyone else has this problem this is what I did . I placed the baby in a tshirt lined box in the brooder (was a small box and a piece of tshirt actually) and let him set in the warmth without touching him more than I had to and let him/her just sit in the warmth. He/She seems to be doing fine, so far , and finally fluffed out slowly but is a little smaller than the others.

Could it be some form of spina bifida? I don't know if chickens can even get that, but it sounds like a birth defect. Maybe it will heal and close on it's own if she stays somewhere where the other chicks don't have a chance to pick on her. Does she move around normally?

Could you post a picture? It could be a couple of things--umbilical cord that hasn't dropped off or maybe a prolapsed vent. A picture might get some more responses. Is the chick pooing?
