New Hen doesn't Perch

We were given a pair of geese and a duck that had never seen a pond before they came here. They were absolutely terrified of the water. We would chase them into it and they would stay right next to the shore to get away and escape the pond. They insisted on staying on our porch and under the yard light all night, I was so glad to see them go to auction.
Take it from me around here it does not matter if they are use to a pond or not my geese and ducks come up to the house every night like clock work, they know the ponds are not safe, they are making sure they are with the dogs behind enemy lines LOL

I'm no expert, but I think the cold ground can suck the heat out of them and I do know of a couple of people that lost their birds to the cold that way. I live in CA, and it never gets that cold here, but as cold as it gets, I still worry when they don't roost. Maybe your pied peach would like to come live with me, I'll even let her warm her toes by the fire, lol!

Heck from what i seen she has a foot of shavings in her pens should be pretty insulated course she could send her on holiday to your place and sit by the fire

By the time January rolls around I'll just pack her up and deliver her myself. Of course you will have to put up with me warming my toes by the fire as well.

And yes the shavings do get pretty deep in the corners of those pens. I'll be going out to put her up later this evening, heck it's getting dark already, I hate Daylight Savings Time!

Some chickens, like my 4 spoiled brats, don't readily take to roosting. I would suggest that at dusk you pick her up and put her on the roost. Keep doing this for a few days and she should get the idea. Wishing you well!! :frow

Lol...."like my 4 spoiled brats", I love it. I too have 4 spoiled brats that don't use their perch. I have put them on and they just jump off and go down to their nesting boxes. S-P-O-I-L-E-D.
