Hiya, everybody! I joined today, hoping you lovely people might be able to help me. I currently don't own any chickens or other birds, though I do hope to someday, because birds are extremely awesome! I do however crochet, and I'm currently working on creating a design for a male mallard duck. (My goal is to design a whole menagerie of birds including chickens. So while I specifically need help with mallards right now please PLEASE feel free to share measurements of other birds too). What I need help with is getting a better idea of size. I want my design to be pretty realistic, but the only easy information I'm getting is that "mallard ducks get to be about 26 inches and around 3 pounds." What I am hoping, is that those of you who own mallard ducks might be able to share with me average measurements and helpful resources like: • Length and Width of Head, Neck, Body, and Feet (precise is amazing but I'll also take guesses , because yours will be better than mine.) • if taken from a specific duck, sharing gender and age and if you consider it larger or smaller than average. • any websites, books etc. that might help. • Any other information you think could help. Thanks so much for whatever help you're able to give.
Hi and welcome to BYC - glad that you have joined us. Sorry, i don't keep ducks, but if you post your question on the duck forum - https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/42/ducks I'm sure that someone will be able to help you out. Good luck CT
Ask on this thread... https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/754458/mallard-thread-not-rouens-mallards Or you could ask @buff goose guy if he might be able to give you measurements... true mallards and hatchery stock are worlds apart in size and shape...
I hope you will let us see some of your work when it is completed. Good luck with getting measurements. Folks on the duck threads may be able to help you.
