Just wanted to introduce ourselves (me and my chickens, that is...)
I've wanted chickens since I was a little girl and used to help the neighbors at our out-of-town rental house collect eggs from their small flock. FINALLY talked DH into gettin' me some chickies! We live in central NC.
We have 8 babies, 1 week old today. 2 of each: Dominques, Golden Campine, Gold Wyandotte and silver wyandotte. Ordered them from Meyer Hatchery and got them before they were 24 hrs old and they took right off. They are VERY cute and the kids love them already. We've already had a ball watching 'chicken TV' and they are so sweet and very tolerant of being handled - they already know people = food, so I figure that's a good sign to keep them reasonably tame.
I have them in my outbuilding right now in a brooder pen until they are old enough to go outside. I'll have to post some pics when I get a chance.
When they go out in a few week, I have a chick-N-Barn with a Chick-n-yard attached ready for them. The coop is a bit small, but they will mostly be free range in our backyard, which has a 4' high chain link fence. I'm HOPING they won't try to fly over the fence TOO much and annoy the neighbors, or I'll have to build them a larger run and coop and keep them up. The area fenced is about 1 acre, so they will have lots of room to do their chicken things.
Anyway, looking forward to getting to know some more backyard chicken folks! I am looking for ideas on a reasonably weather proof feeder, but will post that over in the other category.
