New here and I am not a Chicken!!!

Are you getting RIR from a store such as TSC? If so, those are technically Production Reds, but they are great layers whether they are RIR or PR.

I looking at Rhode Island Reds, we only want 4. I've been told that RIR's are great egg layers.

I've had RIRs over the years, and they are excellent layers. If you are getting them from a hatchery, even though they are labeled RIRs, they will likely be Production Reds, which will not meet APA standards, but will definitely be great layers. Since you getting only 4, are you getting all hens? The recommended ratio of roosters to hens is 1 rooster to every 10 hens, and that ratio is especially important with RIRs are the RIR roosters can be quite aggressive.

No roosters, just egg layers. The small town we are moving to does have laws about roosters. Besides I have Manx cat that like to herd anything on legs.:lol:

Just be sure your Manx cat doesn't like fresh chicken dinner. Most cats will not attack standard sized chickens, but there are always exceptions.

I'm glad you joined us.

The Rhode Island Red is a very nice breed that I'm sure you'll enjoy! My hatchery-quality "Production Red" has been a very good layer and has had a decent temperament, too.

I'm glad you joined our "flock!"

Yes, Rhode Island Reds tend to be great egg layers that are also rather hardy.

My babies, getting ready to transfer to a bigger box. We closed on our new property and will have the coop built in the very near future. The girls are doing well.
