Hi all, im new here and have recently started keeping chickens, My wife and i found this little one at a local garden center and found it adorable, When we got her/him it was around 5 to 6 weeks old and is now around 9 to 10 weeks old. We were told that they only had hens for sale and also that the garden center thought she/he was a bit of a mixture but maybe Pekin. I am thinking maybe a bit of Brahma mix possibly??

Forgot to add, The hackle feathers are quite long but although they look pointed due to the black colouring, The feathers are all very blunt edged. I have also been told (by garden center where purchased from) that the other chick, just in shot is probably a cuckoo maran about a week older than the white chick, Both the chicks have feathered feet and are a similar size and weight. Thanks in advance for any replies :)

:welcome

Looks like a hatchery quality light Brahma to me. :) I'm not sure on whether its male or female, though I would lean more toward male with that comb at 9-10 weeks old.

it look like a mix between a light brahma and a barred rock or dominique. Pretty much looks like a light brahma, but has some barred feathers in its tail and back.

Thanks, i have been searching around and came to the conclusion there could be a bit of light brahma going on with a mix of something else. My other chick has a larger comb than this one and im pretty sure that it is a girl. I am not a hundred percent sure with the white chick though, but all the feathers around tail and hackle are very blunt/rounded off edges and not pointed so i am leaning more toward being a girl (maybe) but as im new to keeping chickens im by no means even close to being able to take an accurate guess

I'm guessing by your description it's most likely a girl but who knows

could be a boy

Unfortunately, unless they're a lot older than you were told they are, both of the birds in your first picture look quite masculine. :/ 9-10 week old girls should not have that big of combs with that much color.

The age may be out a little but somewhere close, Where we bought them from said they were gaurentee'd females, so i guess if they are males they may be returned to the shop as i dont want to upset my neighbours!!
