It's been 30yrs since I've had chickens. Raised broilers for 4-H back in the 90's, had I think OEGB mutts has yard birds and some all black Muscovy ducks.
Due to the state of things these days I am back living w/ and helping my father out. We have an acre of land and he has finally agreed to adding chickens!(cheers to me) I love the genetics game and hope I can breed some, or experiment with them. I am working on a coop and run that is completely enclosed for night time and they will have free range of the acre yard.
Some of the breeds I'm looking into are Andalusian, Hamburg, Spitzhauben (or other med crest birds), Ameraucana, Cream Legbars, Yokohama, Phoenix, and Sumatra. Looking to start small and maybe grow but >.< not more than 12 to 15 birds. Will be looking for eggs, meat and ornamental. Really interested in blue/black/silver plumage w/ crest and a long tail that can lay a moderate amount of blue to green eggs and or used for meat when needed. But all of that is for a later date once I get a first flock started.
Its just me, my brother and my father at home these days. My brother has a god daughter and his friends kids come over alot. I hope to get them intrested in chickens and 4-H.
Pets I have, six cats who all stay in a fenced in yard of their own and sometimes come in the house. No chickens yet I just got the vote of approval from dad about a week ago. Working on the infrastructure first before getting any animals as I have a coon and opossum problem. I also need to build up a place that wont stand in water if we get a hard rain. There is gardening happening too so more goodies for the chickens when I get them.
We live in south of Houston TX, in a small country neighborhood that allows livestock.
Merchandiser at Lowe's full time so will be relying on my brother to help out w/ things.
All the information that I have found here is great.
Thank you for having me!
(Edited to add info I left out. Ok I think I got it all in there this time)
