I just joined, or rather, rejoined.
I had gotten away from looking on this forum, and due to changing computer, and having email passowrd issues, was not able to access my original account.
Anyway, today, one of my hens laid what seems to be a jumbo egg.
Biggest I have seen in years.
I weighed it on a food scale that my dad had, and it weighs about 90 grams, 3 1/4 ounces.
I put it in the carton I have been filling, and carton will not close all the way, being as the carton is for medium eggs.
i usually get medium to large from the two hens I have at this time.
last time I had jumbo eggs was many years ago, from the store.
A bit about myself:
I am 75 years old, single male, with beard.
but my Boer buck goat has a longer beard, LOL
I raised the hens I have from chicks, years before last.
lost a number for assorted reasons, including a couple of snakes that liked young birds as dinner.
Surviving are a red, I call her Red, and a golden red who I call Goldie.
It was my first time raising from chicks.
Had thought to raise a few more, but decided to wait till next year.
I don't need that many eggs, give away a lot of what I get.
I had 4 hens before, older ones that were given to me. those gradually stopped laying, and one passed away from old age.
at one point, one had started laying one or two eggs a week once more, but after i got the new chicks big enough, gave the old ones away. I love animals too much to just off them, but don't like feeding ones that no longer produce.
mine have 2 nest boxes, but rarely use the second box for eggs. once in a while Goldie will lay one on the floor of the coop.
never figured out why.
they have a fair sized yard, need to fix that a bit better, to keep them from possibly flying out, as a few did in the past.
Mine will go to their roosts, made from branches of mesquite trees, just around when the sun goes down, not waiting till it starts getting dark.
Every day when i go out to feed them, they wait at the fence for me.
I can tell which hen laid which eggs, being as Goldie lays light brown eggs, and Red lays darker colored shells, which are a bit smaller.
Just the one egg today, and I wonder if it might be a double yolk egg.
Used to see those in jumbo eggs a lot.
