Hello, all! I recently got chickens for Mother’s Day and I’m new to everything chickens. I’ve been doing a lot of reading and research but would love to be able to interact with this group to learn even more from your collective experience!
We currently have ten chickens approximately 6 weeks old. We have 2 barred rock and 2 light Brahmas. The other six are not what we were told when we got them and still unsure what they are.
I absolutely love watching the babies in the mornings when I let them out into the grass (penned) to forage and be chickens! They help keep me active and engaged in life daily as well; Along with our four dogs. We have a Maremma (lgd) pup in training and a border collie who love to watch over the chicks. When outside in the run, I have them along the dog fence for now. Yesterday, geese flew over head and were going to stop at our pond but the border collie and maremma were having none of that and they continued on their way to the lake.
I’m trying to setup a small farm to support our nutritional needs/lifestyle as well as be able to contribute to the community. I’m starting with chickens but will be branching out further as I feel comfortable with chicken care and gardening. I’m really interested in utilizing our land and working with it instead of against it.
I look forward to becoming an active part of this community!
