The footprint is 6x8, and we're planning on putting 4 birds in there so they're will be a little bit of room for more. I know we've said 4 but I'm pretty sure we'll end up with more of these fuzzy punks. I'll keep my eyes open to see what I can find around here.

I've been here my entire life! In fact, my parents grew up across the street from each other in the same town that my sister and I grew up in (Palo Alto). I'm pretty sure I was around the area when you were here. I'm only living 20 minutes from the house I grew up in. How pathetic is that?? I'm ready to make a move, and my husband is convinced that I was a farm chick in my former life. He's from rural Mississippi, and thought he'd ditched the country living until he met up with me. Huge surprise there!

How exciting about your eggs! What are they?

These are just olive eggs tonight. I have more in the bator along with Games and Welsummers. The olive eggers are from my Blue Wheaten Ameraucana and the Games are from my Kelso. Welsummers are some I bought through this site. I've order 2 batches of Polish from here, but USPS is not being good to those eggs, so not even one. I have EE chicks in the brooder that were shipped with one dozen Polish, but none of the Polish made it. Then in the older brooder I have Black Copper Marans, Wheaten Marans and a Blue Ameraucana. Hoping that one is a pullet, but even if a roo there's no way I won't keep it.

My grown birds are Games, Buff Laced Polish, Whie Crested Black Polish, A big EE roo, and as of monday I added 5 Mille Fleur d'Uccles,, 2 Columbian d'Uccles, 2 bantam white leghorns (will probably not keep)and one little bantam black hen that I'm not positive what she is. Also bought a White Crested Black Polish roo and 3 white and 1 black Silkie roos. When I started I was only going to have 3-4.

Maybe you should go to the Chickenstock on the 5th! Here's a link https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=304383&p=1

I
was a Navy brat in Alameda when I was 4, grew up in Oakland, but when my 3rd daughter was born I moved to Union City. We've been in Modesto just over a year. I walk to the poultry auction almost every monday. It's that close. I have one of my youngest granddaughters living with me and she's a chicken nut. My 14 year old son adores Welsummers. We have a lot of fun with our birds. Just wish I had been younger when I finally got the time to enjoy them.

If you aren't busy you should really check out the Chickenstock. This will be my first one. Lots of things for your whole family to enjoy. There's pics of the place they are holding it and it's very cool. Check out the link and hope you decide to go.
We'll be moving sometime this year when I find my house with some acreage to go with it. I only have 1/4 acre right now and it's shrinking for some reason.

Hi to East Bay and Modesto and all the other folks in northern/central California! Greater Sacramento area here. You guys should come for the state fair--it's going to be early this year. They moved it to July since school starts in August now, and a lot of families have missed out the last couple of years. I have *always* loved the Fur & Feathers exhibit (rabbits, poultry, & guinea pigs have always been cool to me). Now that I'm a chickeneer myself, I'm looking forward to this year's exhibit more than ever.

To the person who started this thread and home-schools her kids: What a great way to integrate science AND philosophy in your kids' education in a hands-on way! I wish so much I had had backyard chickens when my kids were growing up, but at least now I will get to share it with my grandkids and use it as a way to teach them about chickens and connect them with caring for animals. As far as philosophy, let them ponder for themselves the age-old question of which came first, the chicken or the egg? LOL! I can't wait until my girls start laying & I can take my 2-year-old grandson out to the henhouse with me in the mornings to get the eggs and put them in the basket. He's already very gentle with the chickens and treats them with respect but is endlessly curious about them and loves to sit and watch them do their little chicken strut around their pen and peck at their feeder.

Kudos to you for having your flock and home-schooling your kids.
