Hi all ! I'm new here :) Anyways, maybe a little about me before the questions? I think so ! Okay so my name is Justin, I live in Florida, & have 7 animals ! 2 White Crested Pekin Ducks, 1 Cavachon dog, 2 Rabbits, & 2 Finches.
That's probably good enough.
Alright so, I recently found out I had a female and a male duck. We used to think it was two males but then the female laid eggs...
She laid 2 in their pool, & then she laid 1 in her house and 1 out by their water. The two in the pool cracked when they stepped on them and then the other 2 I kept but were infertile.
I made myself an incubator because I believe there is going to be more from where those came from so I took a styrofoam cooler from Publix, put a 25 watt bulb in there along with a dimmer, & 2 foil cup things with water and sponges in both. But I noticed it's EXTREMELY hard to keep the temperature at an exact, along with the humidity. The temperature would vary anywhere from 96 degrees F to around 102 degrees F, then the humidity would go from 40 % to 70% then back to 40% when I would open the top.
I heard of using a fan to ventilate but I could not find a fan that small for the life of me, so I went along without it. People said I should use a computer fan but when I went to go get the computer fan, there was no thing I could plug it into...
So my questions aree:
How can I keep this incubator temperature within the needed range?
How can I keep the humidity in the incubator within the needed range?
The female duck has not laid eggs in about 3-4 days, is that usual? (Their only about 6-7 months old)
Will all her eggs be infertile or will I just have to wait and find out?
ALSO, I was looking into getting a fertile egg or two from like Metzer, Meter, or Stromberg's but they are require like a limit of eggs which I can't afford the cost for like 20+ eggs, which I can't afford the money when they hatch, so does anyone know of someone who will sell maybe 2-4 eggs to me for.. cheapish?
I will not want the eggs yet because I want to make sure the incubator will be ready but anyone who could send me some in the future, would be amazing !
Also, is there any breed I shouldn't get because they may fight with my ducks I have now?
Maybe the same? Or something smaller?
LOTS TO READ but Thanks in advance !

Buy hatching eggs locally, so you can pick up as few or many as you want.

Search the incubator area here on ByC for homemade tips. Posting there will get other homemade styro bator builders helping you. Waterfowl require a stabile environment temp and humidity to hatch so it is good you want to work on the issues before adding eggs.

Ducks often hide eggs when you keep taking them until they feel they have a safe nesting spot. If they roam your yard I would be looking for a hidden nest.

Fertility is something you just have to keep checking for.

As far as fighting unless you end up with more drakes than ducks you should be fine. Don't mix bantam with large fowl ducks, and don't mix domestic with wild (migratory) type ducks.

I actually read your reply on my phone & I quickly called the local Feed store and they gave me a number to a local breeder ! I posted a thread in the Incubator part of ByC, and awaiting a response. I believe what you said about them waiting until they find a secure nesting spot, and hopefully they find a spot... I will have about 6-12 eggs this afternoon because the breeder said that I could get them for about $10 if I could get them this afternoon because she has more eggs to put in her incubator. So I will be getting those eggs this afternoon and hope I have the incubator problem fixed, I may also ask her for advice. I think she said she had Pekins, Mallards, Khaki, Blue Swedish, & a few Black Cayuga's so are all of those okay?
Thanks !
