Years ago had chickens in the back yard and geese in front.
Ofcourse rat problems.
Will post my findings and soultion.

Yeah but, then the cats get tired of rat for dinner and go after the chickens

I have never had my cats go after the chicks. If you are having a problem with the cats pestering chicks a spray bottle of water does the trick
