Welcome to the site. I've done eggs, chicks and adopted adults. Starting from chicks or eggs, its fun to watch them grow and to bond with them. But the young ones are more susceptible to predators while maturing. With older ones you know what your getting, but they need to be quarantined for 30 days before mixing with your flock. Have fun and enjoy.

I hatched and raised my own chicks. There was a favorite that I always picked up (not chased or forced) and handled from my brooder. They are almost one year old now, and that particular hen is the only one that is 100% bonded to me. She will leave the flock to come to me on her own without food and enjoy my company. She doesn't spook, and enjoys being picked up for a kiss when she's let out of her run. She is the only one that follows me in the house. We hang out in the bedroom and watch TV in bed while she snuggles in my lap. I tried that with the other hens and they look lost and uncomfortable without their flock.

Hey,

I'm Beth and I'm looking to connect with other chicken owners. We have 4 silkies now 2 pullets and 2 cockerels. That's the correct terminology for under a year, right? I wasn't wanting 2 roosters for sure so we will see what happens with that in time. I really want to add more chickens and spend hours looking at breeds. I want chickens that are good layers. Our current chickens are in an 8x8 coop and have an attached yard that is also 8x8. We allow them to free range when we are home. I worry that something would get them if they were left out and no one was around.

Do y'all recommend adding baby chicks or pullets? I've read all about the needs of the chicks.
Which do you find to be friendlier? Ones that you've raised from babies or are older ones easily won over. Our silkies will come to eat but trying to get them back in their coop if we need to leave before dark is a hassle.
thanks!!

Hey Darrell from Mississippi here welcome ! I suggest but you an incubator if you wanna go that route I did and am very glad I did I just stared on my chicken journey after cringing st the thought of getting some lol! Alas fast forward I've purchased a home 2 acres right here in town few neighbors a piece of the country right in town live it ! Anyway lol! If you go for a good layer buy eggs and get more for your buc of if you know someone get them to hatch for you . Most people will . I just brought some marans eggs to incubate already hatched out some Malays to sell only because there aren't many found here . But anyway think about that route try eBay they have some really good deals but hurry before the spring rush and prices soar !!! I have hatched a Ayam Cermani, Malay game fowl, now French copper Marans Blue and Black in my incubator. I'm hooked . Good luck !

I hadn't given that a thought. I'll add that to my research. I had hoped eventually to have a broody hen to hatch eggs. This is an eggciting venture. We bought a house with 3 acres right out of the city limit and just love it. Can't wait to get our gardens started. So much to look forward to.
