Hello! I've lurked and read off and on for months, but I took the plunge Sunday and bought some chicks from Tractor Supply. Now my sister says I'm officially "one of you" and my membership is obligatory
Sis has 2 hens under the radar in her suburban yard. I believe she posts here but I do not know her username.
My town *just* allowed keeping hens last December. I'm allowed 4 but Tractor Supply wouldn't sell me less then 6. I tried to explain this to the salesgirl but she said it was "corporate policy". Foolish. But anyhow, now I will have 2 extras (exactly what TS is trying to avoid with their misguided policy), and an untold # of roosters to place somewhere. Mildly worried about that.
But! Between now and then, I now have 6 brand new, week old, unidentified baby bantam chicks to raise.
Thanks to all the info available on this wonderful forum, I was able to set up a brooder and all are doing just fine. They are a non-descript all-over buff/cream color with clean legs (not silkies). They are your stereotypical baby chick. x6. It will be fun to see what they grow up to be.
Anyway, thanks for all the knowledge I have gained as a lurker thus far. I am looking forward to learning more now as an official member!
