Hello, I am new here, and plan to do an introduction post, but I had a quick question first. I just brought home 6 chicks yesterday that are about 1 1/2 weeks old. I had to clean a huge glob of dried poo off one's bottom last night, and tonight it is caked on their again! I am having a hard time getting it all cleaned off, I worked on it about 7-8 minutes and finally put her back in because I didnt want her to get too stressed. Any tips for getting her whole bottom clean, or do I have to get it ALL off. I made sure the vent was clear already. I just don't want to hurt her

If the vent is clear and the chick is able to relieve itself you can do several things to help. After removing as much as possible you can apply vaselene to prevent further poo from sticking. You can also VERY CAREFULLY trim the fuzz in the area to remove anything for it to stick to. This problem should go away on it's own in a few days though.

As far as removing it I've found that if you take a wet wash cloth and place it on the area you can then squeeze the dried lump between your fingers and it will break apart. You then can wash the vent off and should be ok.

I had three with poopy butt today and because it was dried on I had to soak their butts in warm water in a tupperware container with dawn dish soap for a minute and it fell of easily and the chicks seemed to like it. I patted them dry and back under the heatlamp they went.

Thank you! I am going to work on her one more time tonight and then I will try the vaseline. I thought about trimming, but I am a bit nervous about it.

I just held my chickies right up next to the faucet and used my hand to divert the flow over their butts and they didn't seem to mind. In fact, the only time during the whole ordeal when they shut up was when they got their "bidet." On some of the tough stuff, I used a dot of that Lysol automatic dispenser soap - it has so much emollients in it I think it greased the stuff off.

I am definitely a newbie! LOL I would have never thought you could get them that wet! I will keep that in mind if it doesn't look better by tomorrow. She definitely did NOT like the vaseline being on her bottom.

Hopefully Miss "Dirty Butt" as we have been calling her, gets over this problem soon!

I understand you can use a Q-tip to apply olive or veggie oil to the area as an alternative to the petroleum jelly, as well.
