New Here

Welcome to BYC! Make sure to add your location to your profile. My advice to a new BYC keeper is: don't buy prefab coops, they are normally cheaply made & poorly designed. Chicken Wire doesn't keep predators out, use hardware cloth/wire. Raccoons can open many latches, I use a carabiner on my door & nesting box door. Chickens need lots of ventilation. Build bigger than you think you'll need. BYC members really want to help you be successful. There are no stupid questions. So glad your here!

Welcome to Backyard Chickens!

Check to make sure you are zoned for chickens

Hi! :welcome One thing to consider is what breed you will get. Do you need a breed hardy in winter? Do you want them to be good layers? Do you want to have chicks? Consider these questions when choosing a breed. Here is a handy website for helping to choose:

Also, you should decide whether or not you want a rooster.

Again, welcome to BYC. You'll love it here.

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

BYC has Topic of the Week articles which I have found to be a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group. This one might be of particular interest to you:
Topic of the Week - Getting Started, Keeping Chickens

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)
