This is Dorothy the roo yesterday. He had “danced” at me and my 17 month old so he was in time out while the others were out.

Welcome to BYC! I had to go look up Buff Chanteclers. Pretty birds. Ooh, they're Canadian! I see you're in Texas, say hi on the Texas thread in the where are you section of the forums. I'm SW of you, just north of Fort Worth. Have your cats met your birds? My daughter's Siamese did - not when they were tiny, but now that they're bigger, he's just curious and interested.
Glad to meet another Texan! The cats have met the birds. Charkie doesn’t care anything about them but Bagheera is verrrrrry interested. We bought 2 bantams about six weeks ago and unfortunately he got one, then the replacement so now we have just one.

Such a pretty bird! I have a couple Buff Orpingtons so now I see why it is so easy to make a mistake between the two.
You're in Texas? You will need to take some serious steps to keep the Chanticleers cool. "My Pet Chicken" describes them as "Chanteclers are the first-ever Canadian breed, and were developed for good egg and meat production and hardiness even in the coldest of winters. Toward that end, they're on the chunky side with extra-small combs and wattles. They are TREMENDOUSLY cold-hardy and should be a top choice for you if you live in a frigid climate."

Do you have any advice on keeping them cool this summer? To be honest I’m disappointed that I wasn’t given the breed I requested AND that one of my pullets turned out to be a rooster. But oh well.

Oh my where are my manners this morning!
WELCOME to BYC!:welcome
This is a great place to learn ALL the ropes!
I'm in New Jersey so we CAN get into the 90s and occasionally hit 100s in the middle of summer. Winter can get below 0 on occasion. I don't have quite the same problem as you but I do try to keep my BOs cool in summer heat. BOs are also a cold hardy bird.
Ventilation is #1 for chickens everywhere. In hot areas like yours you can probably handle a more open type coop, something I'm sure others here can help you with better than I. Shade is necessary over the run with lots of spots having something to hide under or retreat to out of the sun. Offer several water stations and keep them clean and fresh. I've seen people spray their birds with a mist of water, and some leave a shallow basin or small kiddie pool of water for them to walk in. Watermelon straight from the fridge is a cooling treat. Soda bottles filled halfway to 3/4 with water, laid on its side, and frozen can be placed around their favorite shady run areas (so they can snuggle up to it) and even in their water. I'm sure you'll get lots of info on this site from others with experience with your environment.
On a different note, where did you get them? If from a farm supply store like Tractor Supply you seriously take your chances on breeds and genders. We have an entire thread just about that subject. If you got them from a local breeder as I do you should contact them about not getting what you paid for. My breeder has taken back an accidental rooster in exchange for a similarly priced pullet. (Actually got 2 pullets because the cockerel was worth more being a Lavender Orpington). If you got them from an online hatchery I'd contact them about the mistakes and ask what they will do about not sending the breed you ordered. While you're at it you should probably start looking at breeds that tolerate high heat for your future additions/replacements. :jumpy:jumpy
Good luck with your flock and keep us updated. We LOVE pictures of chickens and coops and runs and anything else connected with these wonderful birds!:love

I am a first time chicken owner. We got our first 4 in February.
They were supposed to be Buff Orpingtons but I have recently found out they are Buff Chanteclers instead AND that one of my hens is in fact a rooster!
They are named after The Golden Girls, Blanche, Rose, Sophia and Dorothy (the rooster).
So far I love the relaxing nature of watching the girls (and boy) exploring the yard and observing their personalities develop.
When not in the back yard with the chickens I’m with my daughters and husband. We have 2 cats, Charkie and Bagheera, as well as a Yorkie named Wego.
Welcome! I love hanging out with the chickens, too! I named one of my Buff Orpingtons Norene, after my mother who passed away at 92 recently. She had dementia and took to calling me Dorothy. We watched the Golden Girls a lot. Lol
