Hi, Welcome to BYC. My friend got me into chickens over 10 years ago. We live on a 1/2 acre lot outside of town. The chickens free range on about 1/4 acre. They go into their coop at night and get shut in. My husband is very supportive of my hobby but once in a while he pretends not to like them. Then he feeds them and locks them in a night. I have one rooster and 9 hens. This rooster is very tame and has not attacked me. But I have had ones that I had to get rid of because they spurred me. I keep the rooster because he protects the hens. He is always looking out for danger in the sky. He warns them if there is a hawk or something and they run for cover. Hope you have a great experience with your chickens.

The garden coop that you wasn’t to build doesn’t have quite enough space for 4 chickens. I love the clear plastic panels for the roof but don’t know if they will hold up to the amount of snow you may get. We used barn tin that we got off Craigslist. If you put the supports close enough the clear may work. Keep in mind it could get very hot in there in the summer if you aren’t building under the shade of trees.

Hello and welcome to BYC! Happy to have you join our community. I covered my run with corrugated aluminum with plenty of 2 x 4 supports and slanted so it's easy to remove snow. I expanded my run to stretch out into a sunny area to allow more sunlight into the run during the winter. I used heavy duty, clear PVC with the UV protection. This is also supported well to hold up under the snow load. My chickens love to hang out and take dust baths in that section. During the winter months I cover the sides of the run with heavy duty clear shower curtains to block the wind. This keeps the run and the attached coop warmer than the ambient air temps. It's also easily removed on warmer days. I let them out to run about my backyard everyday, weather permitting. But I'm right there with them due to the high predator population. Best of luck with your new flock.
