Hello, folks!!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

We just got chicks this spring. My husband was a really hard sell because we live in town (in a rural community- big backyards and plenty of backyard chickens in our neighborhood!) so at first we only got three chickens. I eventually convinced my hubby that we needed more than 3 eggs a day for our family of 5 so we bought three more and ended up with one more thanks to my Mom and Dad! They also started their chicken journey this spring so we built matching coops and went in together for chicks. They live in the country so they now have 10 or more chickens!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

Currently we have 7 chickens!

(3) What breeds do you have?

1 Buff Orpington named Sunny
1 Black Sex-Link called Moonshine
1 Americauna named Muffin
1 Barred Rock named Joy
1 Brahma that we call Angel
2 mystery chicks that were sold as barred rock and are some type of maran! One looks just like my mom’s mystic maran and the other is the same size and looks similar but doesn’t have the white on the wing tip.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

I never dreamed that these chickens would become beloved pets. They all have different personalities and are just as sweet as our other pets. We are also doing the deep litter method and I thought chickens would be way smellier than they are, which was a nice surprise.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Reading, raising monarch butterflies and embroidery.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I am married to my best friend. We’ve been married 14 years and have three beautiful girls. We love Jesus and want to share the gospel with as many people as we can, so if you want to know more about Jesus feel free to message me. My husband is a project manager for a construction company and I homeschool our girls. They are in 8th, 4th and 2nd grade. We started homeschooling during the pandemic but fell in love with it so it was the biggest blessing in disguise!!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I found BYC google searching the difference between a hen and a roo for the different species we have! :D
