That would be ideal, and a great suggestion. However it would cost way more than I’m willing to spend to fence my current ~2000 sq ft run area. It would also limit my ability to move the coop & run throughout the year, which I do to allow the ground vegetation to recover. Many of us live rural, however, it is still possible to mitigate losses. If you do not want to lose any chickens you can make them a run with a 1/2 inch hardware cloth ceilings, side walls and an apron (extending the hardware cloth out a few feet around the perimeter after fastening to the bottom). Of course with a sturdy frame. I had to rebuild my large run this past week because I underestimated the rainfall where we live. My tarp on top of my hardware cloth roofs were failing. I purchased a 20x20 galvanized steel carport and hardware clothed the sides and extended an apron and added a walk-in door. My main coop is 18x8 and is also hardware cloth aproned. I also have predator eye solar lights around everything which are extremely effective for coyotes. When I am home, which is everyday since I work at home, my chickens can kind of free range in the backyard. However they are fenced in and the entire backyard is netted (hawks and black vultures are my biggest issue).
Moving the coop/run is a moot point if the chickens are taken by predators. That would be ideal, and a great suggestion.
