Hello! New here. Looking into getting started with chickens and wanting to know which ones are best for laying production but are quiet and friendly. We don’t want ANY that are potentially mean in any way as we have littles that will be around the chickens too. Looking forward to learning on this new journey in our lives!!

Hello and Welcome to BYC. Glad that you have joined this fun and poultry loving community. I agree with what some folks have said about hens that do well with small children. Large hens fair better when a toddler takes a tumble with one.... Tiny hens get hurt easier. I've never had Buff Orpintons but if I had small kids I'd at least have 3 or 4 of those. Perhaps a self centered reason would be they would mostly likely go broody sooner or later and kids do get a thrill our of mama hens and chicks.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you are here! I’ve also heard Buff Orpington are good with kids, but I don’t have any (Buff Orpingtons or kids)! My Cream Legbar is the sweetest of my girls. Really easy to hold. Not at all aggressive or skittish. Don’t know if all Cream Legbars are as sweet as mine, but mine sure is.

Hello and welcome to BYC! It's great to have you here with us 😄
Good luck with your future chickens. I definitely recommend Buff Orpingtons as they are very friendly in my experience.

Welcome to BYC! :frow
I would personally recommend the larger breeds, they tend to be less flighty (although most of their temperament depends on the individual bird).
I'd recommend breeds like Orpington's or Jersey Giants. I agree with Debbie292d, Silkies are good breeds but don't lay that many eggs.
