Welcome from So Cal! What sort of coop were you wanting to build? Might want to take into account the types of predators in your area. I live in the city and we have GIGANTIC racoons, some possums, coyotes that trot right up the street, skunks, rats, all kinds of stuff you wouldn't think would be in the city. Good luck with your coop. If you are near Riverside/Norco area, I might have a couple of hens to spare if I am to trim down my flocks to make room for the new ones coming up.

Welcome from San Diego! (North County) Here's my suggestion, build a bigger coop than you think you will need, because if you are anything like the rest of us, you will fill it up eventually! But seriously, what kind of chickens do you plan on getting, and what do you want something mobile or permanent? Will you be free ranging? These are all important considerations before you build a pen, because it's probably the most expensive part of getting chickens, so it pays to do it right the first time.
