new here

Welcome to BYC, Kevin. Glad you decided to join our flock. Which breed (or hybrid) would be best for you depends on what you want in a breed. If egg production is your main priority, I would suggest Black Sex Links (Black Stars), which are hardy and friendly, egg laying machines. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year. If you want a friendly, calm, and gentle breed that makes a potential lap pet, I would suggest one of the breeds that have a well deserved reputation in this area, such as Australorps, Orpingtons, Cochins, Brahmas, Sussex, and Faverolles. Australorps are excellent layers (the best on this list), and Cochins are the poorest layers on this list (but the best brooders and mothers). Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breeds or hybrids you end up getting, good luck with your flock.

Hi Kevin, it's nice to meet you. Do you have a special purpose in mind for your flock ? Egg layers or meat birds, or some of each?

I want to do egg birds, but I also thought about dual purpose birds as well in case we did want the meat.

Among those breeds on the friendly, calm, and gentle list that I mentioned in my post; Australorps, Orpingtons, Brahmas, Sussex, and Faverolles are all good dual purpose breeds (lots of eggs and meat). :o)
