I am so glad you are level headed enough to realise that there is more to taking care of a horse, than just getting one, providing shelter for it and a field of grass. I see so many times of people asking for a "free horse". They can't afford to buy one, but they can provide shelter for it and a big field, and lots of love. Actually, buying a horse is the cheapest part of having one. No kidding. The vet care, the yearly shots, the care of their feet (they need their feet trimmed, even if you don't keep shoes on them. And I have seen way too many damaged feet, crippled horses and pain from people who "did it themselves"), and vet care when there is an emergency is really expensive (at least a couple hundred dollars for a more "simple" thing - early/just starting case of colic on a weekend, cause someone gave the horse something it should not have had to eat "but they loved it and didn't know that would hurt it"), feed in the winter time, and a whole lot more that comes with responsible care of a horse.

I too had always wanted a horse. Couldn't as a child because the folks didn't want to feed anything you couldn't eat. Husband didn't want me to have one or any critters. Had to wait to dump the husband and get in a car accident at 45 to realize that life is short and I needed to make my dreams come true. Took me a year but I finally did it and you can too.

In the beginning, I didn't have horse property so I boarded at a co-op barn that required chores and $150.00 per month. Great learning experience on how to care for my horse when I did get the property.

Another option is leasing a horse. Gals at the barn leased a horse where they paid for the board but the owner paid for the vet and feet.

Another gal, leased out her horse and paid the vet and board but the leasee did the chores.

Agreed 110%! A "free" horse is never free.

OP, gorgeous new girl you have there!

I LOVE that mare! Such unusual coloring too! I definitely want to see more pictures of her posted here!

What are your plans for this horse? She would make a lovely mount or driving horsey!

Thanks everyone!

We're expecting to have her transported hopefully around January... It's killing me to wait!

She is broke to ride and I can't wait to go to the mountains with her.

She's bred to a Palomino vanner right now and is due in April. This will be my first time owning a horse in foal, I'm excited and nervous.

We have 2 colts are the moment. It's sooo stressful when it's time for them to give birth cause ya never know when they're gonna have it! I don't think we've ever had one have a baby during the day .. ALWAYS at night!

This April when 3 of our mares were due we locked them up in the pens and every hour we'd get up during the night and check on them ... sadly my mare's baby died!

We got out there to check on her and she had, had a HUGE baby but she hadn't got the sack off of his nose and we didn't know if the colt was just born dead or she didn't lick it off!
