Hi everyone,

We have 6 hens on a little over half an acre in a town that doesn't allow them. We consider them pets, the town doesnt. Here you need 3 acres for chickens,2 for horses, yet can have up to 3 dogs on any size lot. Utter nonsense. They haven't called us on it yet, but I noticed my grumpy neighbor snooping at them yesterday. I'd like to begin the process of seeing if we can get the law changed, but I have no idea how to start. That's why I joined this forum- I'll be headed over to the towns and ordinances folder to do research. I e-mailed my town Supervisor today to express interest in discussing the matter at a town meeting. I might be shooting myself in the foot by putting me and my chicken outlaws on his radar... But hopefully things work out.

Glad you joined us! Best of luck with changing the ordinance! Do start a thread here:

You'll get some advice there from others that have done this and possibly some people in your area too.

Hello and Welcome to BYC.

So sorry about the issue. And hate to be negative, but it takes a lot of time to get the ordinances changed and even a well-known celebrity in Atlanta had to give up her flock for the same situation.

It makes me mad that folks can have noisy and even dangerous dogs but sweet chickens aren't allowed.

Good luck with your battle.

Hi and welcome to BYC - you have some great advice already so I'll just say hello!

All the best

Please post on your state thread, other chickeners may rally round to support you. Others may have won the permission in their town and can be very helpful.

I live in Parma as well, but have 5 acres and 15 chickens in a large coop, 60x12. My neighbors don't mind but they have objected to the rooster I had for a while. A hawk took him anyway. I would like to help change the ordinances to tolerate chickens too! I smell manure from farms nearby and hear all kinds of noises as well, it really is ridiculous.
