New in Socal

We have a mix of chicken breeds at our farm, both those adapted to cold climates and those adapted to warm. When the two breed, they create the perfect bird for our state, which is below zero during the winter and above one hundred degrees during the summer. They have medium sized combs, a medium sized body, and lay well.

My Speckled Sussex and Buff Orpingtons have been my favorites of all the breeds we have had. We raised Barnvelders (they were my first try at hatching), silkies, australorps, partridge rocks, Rhode Island reds, and a few others. I look for sweet tempered birds that are cold hardy and good layers. Since you are in SoCal, you will not need to worry about the cold hardy part!

It is nice not to have to factor in cold hardiness. :) Thank you for your info regarding breeds. I'm hoping whatever we end up with are gentle.

Glad you joined the Backyard chickens flock. You may also want to post on your state thread. It's the best place to ask what breeds handle the climate . I've never been to California so tend to think it is always hot, I'm in the middle west and we get hot summers and very cold winters. As a rule chickens handle cold much better than heat, so it would be good to check with others.
