Hello Everyone,

I do not have chickens...yet. :) We are planning on getting a dozen or so chicks next spring (2013) and some nigerian dwarf goats.
I joined to learn as much as possible before the big day comes. Right now I'm still researching breeds, coop designs, etc.

I think we are getting Black Australorps, New Hampshire Reds, Silver & Gold Laced Wyandottes, Speckled Sussex and Araucanas. This is still up for debate, but the all seemed cold hardy and fairly calm in temperament.

I guess I should write a little bit about who I am. My name is Nicole and I have two beautiful daughters and a wonderful husband. I had goats and chickens as a child and loved them. Then my passion became dogs with obedience and agility. I met my husband a few years later and he is terribly allergic to dogs, so my future with dogs was cut short. :( I then turned to breeding African Pygmy Hedgehogs and worked as a Vet Tech for several years. I bred the hedgehogs for 8 years before I developed a severe allergic reaction to the hedgehogs. Talk about a bummer! At the time I had a couple of pet snakes and a lizard, so I got into breeding snakes. I've wanted to get back into having a "mini-farm" for years, but hubby always said "no". Finally he gave in on the condition that I sell the snake business, he HATES snakes. So I made the decision that the farm is where my heart is and my two daughters are so excited. They love the snakes and we are keeping a couple as pets, but nothing is as good as fresh eggs, watching your chickens bustle about and the adorable and mischievious goats. So that's a bit of my background with animals anyways.

Can't wait to meet new friends and learn as much as possible about chickens. Also would love to chat more with people in the Southern NH area that have chickens and have any advice to give.

Thanks for reading my long introduction!

Nicole
