Good day all you fellow Texans.  My family just moved to Boerne (near San Antonio) and I will be building a new coop and starting up a new flock when I return from deployment ( I am with the US Navy).  I moved from Minnesota where our coop was at ground level.  My wife is telling me that all the coops she is seeing in the area are up on as she calls it "stilts".  My question is this, is this just a coincidence, or is there a reason?  My plan was to build a 8 X 10 coop with a concrete floor.  This is just the hen house. The birds will have a 75 x 100 fenced in pen to scratch and roam in. Is this a mistake????  Will appreciate all your input and friendly advice!!!

Have a great day!!!

Well generally chickens like to scratch the ground for snacks so the concrete may not be such a good idea, as to why the coops are on "stilts" it could be because in my opinion makes it easier for gathering eggs, cleaning and my hens liked laying more when I had the coop elevated than when I had if on the floor. Hope this helps, good luck!
