Hiya! I'm Devon from Pa. And I'm about to inherit some chickens. First I didn't want them because we already have a menagarie. But Hubby and a co-worker of mine ganged up on me behind my back. She's getting divorced and is trying to cut as many expenses as possible. ( She may also be losing the farm she keeps them on due to the fact it's her soon to be ex's, family farm ) So I'm getting the chickens, the coop, the feed, their waterer---the whole she-bang on two conditions: one we don't eat her daughter's favorite hen two: if she's ever at a better stage in her life, we re-set her up in chickens. Easy agreement for me to negotiate. Of course I'd like her to teach me how to make those scotch eggs too! YUM!
First I was against this because we already have a boatload of animals to care for. There's the 3 horses, the dog, 5 cats, 2 in the barn for pest control and 3 in the house and the 13 reptiles. And who's gonna be taking care of the chickens? Probably me! Hubby wants eggs. I want the meat. It would be good if the next time two blizzards came by in one week, like a few years ago, I wouldn't HAVE to go to the store to buy meat. Of course if we're going to be killing and butchering chickens, its probably gonna be me doing the deed! ( Hubby collects guns but he's no hunter. This confuses me greatly! )
Hubby wants to free range our chickens. ( We have a small farm. ) I wanna a chicken tractor. ( We have a very healthy population of foxes in the area! And we MIGHT have coyotes moving in. ) Hubby is grumbling about the whole 'tractor' idea. I want Silkies. I also want some meat hens. Is there any breed that has more dark meat than light?
So yeah, I gotta lot to learn! Please help!

. Sounds like you are jumping in with both feet.

I like your tractor idea but I also like the free range idea. I don't tend to free range mine unless I can keep a close eye on them. Coyiotes are everywhere where I live. Still. be prepared to lose a few should you free range. So maybe you can do some of both - range when you're around, tractor when not?
Sounds like with your enthusiasm this will be a fun experience for the whole family. Not sure on the dark meat question....I think most meat birds have been bred to produce a high ratio of white meat but there might be some heritage breeds out there with large hind quarters to give you more dark. Best of luck to you!!

I have the same confusion with my husband. He collects guns too, but doesn't hunt either and almost never shoots them at all. Hmm. Maybe it's a boy thing. Good luck with the menagerie.

Thanks you all for the very warm welcome!

I've already figured out that hubby and I seem to be coming at the chicken topic from two completely different directions! His newest brilliant idea was "Hey Hon! Why don't we just keep the chicken coop in the paddock with the horses?"

UGH! I tried to rationally explain to him that we could probably do that IF we owned terror-breds or Arabian horses but we have HAFLINGERS! They're very curious about anything that humans are doing. They're the only breed of horses I know that will leave their grass to come over and check out what you're doing. ( Never pick raspberries in their paddock! You'll won't get that blonde nose out of the bucket! )

Anyway, I told him that Indy, our biggest and most troublesome gelding, would HAVE to check out that structure in his field. Then he would smell the chicken feed and try to get to it. The coop would be rolled about and stepped on until he could find a way to get at the chicken feed. And the fluttering and squawking of the birds probably wouldn't scare him off very long if there was food he wasn't allowed to have, involved. ( This was the horse that forced us to electrify our fencing because he was regularly getting out of the field by crawling UNDER the fence and wandering around the neighborhood! )

He seems to think that Indy would NEVER do that!

Who needs drama! We have Haflingers!
