Welcome! Where in the High Desert are you? It's a pretty big area.

Regarding the dog, you could always do what I did. My family loves to tell on me for this, but...

The last dog I had that killed my chickens... I picked the largest of them all, held the dog by the collar and beat him with the dead chicken!

Now, I'm sure everybody is having life sized visuals on this, hee hee, but it worked!

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

Ameraunas are birds with specific characteristics and color patterns that breed true. They also should lay a blue or blue-green egg. EE's are usually mixes of different Ams, or crossed with other breeds, and don't have the proper color pattern or look. However, they are often very good egg layers and hardy birds. Unless you are planning on breeding and selling or showing birds, it is unlikely to make any difference in the home flock whether they are purebred or not.

Once a dog has killed chickens they are usually completely unreliable around birds. Build a good sturdy run fence, and don't let your dog around your birds. Ever.

Greetings from Kansas!

From a dog trainers point of view, and that of a bird owner, a bird killing dog tends to be a repeat offender. They are trainable. Do you want to go to the trouble? Good fences make good dogs and neighbors.

Thank you all for the encouragement. I am in Phelan, Ca. Most probably never heard of it. But...we are near the top of the Cajon pass on the 15 freeway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Welcome! I'm from SoCal too - Yucaipa (off the 10 between Redlands and Palm Springs). Our dog is from Phelan. We got him from TANYA'S when they were having an adoption day in Redlands.
