In the Brooder
Hi there!
Just introducing myself using the handy dandy template.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I’m relatively new to chickens. We got our first chicks last year. Although, we have kept ducks for about four years now. I like that the chickens are more “personable” and like to spend time with us, whereas the ducks don’t seem to care to be around us after they grow up.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
2 Roos, 2 hens, 4 young hens (three months old), 6 pullet chicks (hopefully), 1 drake, 1 duck hen, 2 for sure young duck girls, 1 young unsexed duck, 4 eggs under the broody duck and 4 ducklings coming from a hatchery tomorrow.
Wow, just typing that out almost makes me feel like the crazy bird lady.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Rhode Island Red roo, red shouldered Yokohama roo, gold laced Wyandotte, 2 Easter Eggers, 2 barnevelders, 2 buff orpingtons, 1 Australorp, 1 Rhode Island Red, 1 blue laced red Wyandotte, 1 buckeye. Ducks: magpie hen sitting on mixed eggs, Ancona/magpie/runner cross drake (he’s VERY handsome), 2 Pekins, 1 Cayuga and 4 Blue Swedishon the way.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Googling info on keeping poultry.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening and cooking. I used to cook professionally, so now I just flex those muscles and experiment for family and friends.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have two little boys (4 and 2), a great husband, 1 dog and 1 cat. We live on 1.5 acres and I never imagined myself living the country life, but here I am...and I love it! I’m pretty nerdy about consuming information about topics that interest me. I’ve been learning everything from seed starting to pruning overgrown fruit trees; from raising babies in an evolving brooder to caring for a hen who had her scalp ripped off by an aggressive roo.
