I have 3 chickens. They are all almost a year old. My most dominant Welsummer stopped laying about a month ago now. She was previously laying 1 almost every day.

She is not broody (My silkie currently is) and is otherwise acting just fine. She is eatting, drinking, perky, crop acting appropriately and shows no signs of stress. I have not had any of them molt yet, but I don't see her loosing feathers or anything.

Should I be concerned or is she just taking a break? We are in Texas so it has been pretty hot, but has cooled off with some rain the past week. In the extreme heat they were getting lettuce floating in ice water and some frozen watermelon to help cool down, but otherwise just have oyster shell, grit and chicken food. They are in a run but free range about 45 minutes per day when we are out with them (Lots of predators around here)

Just wanting to know if this extended period is normal or not or if I am missing something. Thanks!

She might be just taking a break or getting ready to molt. How long has it been since she laid an egg?

Laying an egg a day would not be the norm for a mature Welsummer, but is not uncommon in first season pullets.

A break (even extended) would be fairly normal after such a stint.. I've seen exactly that several times throughout the 10+ years I've been raising chickens.

She may still molt or not. They don't read our books about they should or shouldn't do and when!

Because your description doesn't present other behavioral concerns, I would probably not be worried.

If you do start to see behavioral changes like lethargy, loss of appetite, self isolating, etc.. immediate attention is suggested.

For now, sounds like she's living the life.

Hope she continues to thrive and you see many years of beautiful eggs from her! :fl
