So my first and oldest pullet started to lay last week. Best day of my life by the way! I was so excited to find that first egg . (I found two that day, separate times)she skipped one day and laid one each day after. So I've gotten a total of like 7 or 8? But she started to worry me after 3 days of not laying. I did finally just get one today after her little "break". Is it normal for them to be inconsistent like that? When does the day inconsistsncy become a reason for concern? I'm so proud of my girl. I just want to make sure she stays happy and healthy!

Picture is of the hen I was talking about. Stella.

Remember, this is all new to her and it may take her several months to steady out to a routine that works for her system. Different breeds and even hens within a breed are all unique. The up side is since she started laying this summer, it's likely that she'll continue to lay through this coming winter. She shouldn't have her first real hard molt till next summer/fall.

Congrats on those first eggs! It is a real eggciting time! I think just about everyone remembers their first eggs. It is a milestone!

Awesome. Good to know that it's normal. Im new to it all so I am always full of questions! I'm expecting my other 4 to start possibly in August.

There are different "interpretations" but keep in mind that it takes ~24-26 hours for the hen to produce an egg from scratch. So they can only lay one a day and it will get a little later each day until there will come a day or two break before the cycle starts all over again. So if you're checking twice a day, early and later, and find additional eggs, it means the others have started as well. :D

Congrats on the egg! One of mine started laying a little over 3 weeks ago. She laid one day, skipped a day but laid two soft shell eggs that night, skipped 3 days, then had some regular and soft shell eggs fairly consistently. Then just this week, she skipped two days.

I have not had any soft shell yet. Luckily they were all hard little, pretty white eggs. It felt amazing finding that first one!!!

Okay! Thanks so much for taking the time to explain it to me! I really appreciate it.
