New Layer Eggs Taste like Egg Shell?

I have had an explosion of stinging nettle around our place and have started to pull it and toss it into the chicken run. After 3 years, the chicken run is just plain ole dirt so they attack anything that I toss in there. I think the stinging nettle is their favorite so far...

The eggs have been tasting really good lately, so I am going to continue with the stinging nettle for the birds. I will probably even dehydrate some for them to eat this winter. Stinging Nettle is actually a really healthy green to eat. Some day I will try it for myself.

That's awesome your chickens like it. I've planted it here for my on use, but will be sure to share it around now. :D

How interesting. Thank you for the suggestion. Their water is pretty clean, 5 gallon drinker and I dump the tray daily .. but they might not be drinking enough because the yard is big and I don't see them return to the drinker during the day while they free range. I have an automatic waterer for the dogs on the other side of the yard but I doubt they've found it and I didn't think to show them... but I will now. Couldn't hurt.

Maybe try offering scattered watering dishes? Mine have plenty of fresh in the run but aside from laying time they don't willingly hang out there during the day when there's so much land to explore! I've had to scatter water spots using cheap take n toss Tupperware or feed store bowls all over to ensure they're drinking enough.

Most likely it's a weed that's in season and will pass. Keep us updated!

Eggs will taste like what a chicken eats.. that said we had an experience similar this winter. Our eggs were tasting like poo, real bad taste, I had no clue why. One day I went to check on (mid winter and they are my sons so he did most of the care). I saw their water bowl(a heated dog bowl for winter). It was disgusting poo in it where the chickens were walking in it and pooing in it. I was not happpy with my son. I explained how that wasn’t healthy for the chickens and it wasn’t healthy for us. He kept it clean and within two weeks the eggs were back to normal.
Oh gross! Glad there back to normal!

I've seen stinging nettle recommended along with comfrey for chickens. It doesn't grow around here, thank God. I first met stinging nettle as a teenager visiting my cousins in the Pacific Northwest. I had never seen it before and had no idea . . . yikes!

My gals will have to settle for comfrey, and everything else growing around here!
