Hi there

Our barred rock laid its first egg on the afternoon of 8/7. It was a double yolker.

On 8/10 in the afternoon she laid another. A normal egg.

On 8/12, in the morning, there was a broken, soft shelled egg outside of the nest in the coop.

Today is 8/16 and we’ve had no more eggs since then. Is this normal? She’s the only one laying at this point, the others are slower growing breeds.

I had a similar thing with one of my pullets. Like the previous poster mentioned it just takes some time. Heat right now could also be a factor. Are they on layer feed and do they have oyster shells in a separate dish on the side? That can also help.

Yep, they've got oyster shells near the food, and they're on layer. It's been a week since the last egg now. 🤷‍♂️

Do you free range?

They're mostly in coop/run. I do let them out into our yard for a little bit every day. But it's not a big yard and I've looked all over to see if she's hiding the eggs somewhere, but can't find any. The first two times she laid an egg, the run door was open and she went back from the yard into the run and coop to lay in the nest.

Well, as long as she eating/drinking/pooping/moving around OK, all you can do is wait.

Yep, she seems totally fine otherwise. Friendly as ever! Just surprised that she started and then stopped.

So, another week has now gone by, no new eggs of any kind. She's eating well, eating oyster shell too. I haven't seen her go back into the nests in awhile, but I have heard her do a couple of egg songs while strutting around the run.
