Hi! One of my 4 chickens started laying exactly a week ago. I have 2 others that started about 2 weeks ago and another that hasn’t started laying yet. My chicken that started laying a week ago, has had strange looking eggs. So far I have found that it may be calcium. Today, she laid an even stranger egg with a white paper-like substance. I was wondering if anyone had any idea what it is. I noticed it’s happened every other day. They are currently on layer feed and I give them a fruit and worm mix to snack on every other day. It has dried fruit, seeds, mealworms, corn, oats, oyster shell and wheat. They also free range in the evenings.
Thanks in advance!

Your pullet is not fully developed. Her eggs will get better as she matures. That last one is interesting. I've never seen that. The lumps on the shell are excess calcium deposits.

What are you offering as a feed?

And Welcome to BYC!
Thanks so much! I figured that’s what it was but just wanted to be sure. That last one def is interesting. I found some info that said it could even be urate. It caught me by surprise so figured I’d ask on here.

They are currently on an 16% layer crumble, Dumor brand.

Thank you!

Was this stuff hard like calcium...or could you peel it off?
It’s able to be peeled off, but the thicker chunks are a little harder to remove. It breaks apart like flakes. It reminds me of wet paper or toilet paper that dries and hardens a bit. The thinner areas feel a bit rough, almost like salt. I thought for a bit that maybe it was part of the bloom, but I don’t know if it comes out thick that way or not.
