New little bantam chicks - any thoughts on the breeds? *Updated*

I just got done scrutinizing the little toes of the buff one. Definitely just 4 toes on both feet. I love it's little tophat! That's one of the reasons my daughter picked it out! She said it looked like a mohawk.

here is a pic of a chick with 4 toes on one foot and 5 on the other

Thanks for the pics, txmel! The little buffy doesn't have anything like that. I checked both feet closely, and there's only 4 toes on each. I would be just as happy, if it were a silkie/cochin mix. It's the calmest one out of the six chicks we have!

if its a silkie you will be able to tell once it starts to feather out some. usually when they are about a week old you can tell the difference in the feathers

I have several silkie cochin crosses that are absolute loves! And the hens are great broodies.

You can get a silkie with 4 toes, especially from hatcheries. I would still think silkie for the buff despite not having the 5th toe. Cochin for the other cutie pie!!

I just posted a new picture of my little buff chicken. It's the fourth one on my original post. Any thoughts from anyone? Just curious. Thanks!!

What color is the buff chick's skin? Silkies have back skin. I did have a white silkie roo with only 4 toes on each foot once. 5 toes is the standard, but hatchery birds often don't meet up to the standard perfectly. He was a wonderful roo, though. I do think the buff one looks a bit silkie-ish.

It's skin is black. I'm thinking this one might end up being a roo! It awkwardly perched on a stick I have in the brooder, lifted it's beak up in the air, and let out a very defined "Chirp!". It was cute.
