New member: Not new to chickens. Have owned flocks from 40 to 5 is size. Have only had on rooster, which I own today. Predictors have been my main problem. Tried everything from dog to night scope stalking. Don't use poison. Currently have 5 hens and a rooster. Rooster is mean as hell, and has prevented hawk attackers to date I range my chickens. Presently they are close to house. I lock them at night is electrified coop. They lay very well when I don't use commercial feed.
Current breed is Plymouth Rock. Have tried everything and came back to Rocks. The Dominique's were particularly disappointing. My goal is to get a self sustaining flock. Finds a food source that I can sustain with small effort. Have the chicken range without be decimated-this will require a caged perimeter. It will need to be about 1/4 acre. And have the chickens not need daily maintenance. I travel, trips usually 10 days.
That's probably all the perinate information.
