I live in Augusta GA withe my hubby and 2 yr old daughter. We go through a lot of eggs. Hubby wants to raise some chickens for the eggs. I had chickens and ducks for pets before but that was 20 yrs ago. Due to having 3 dogs the chickens have to be enclosed the whole time but they will have a run. Also the space only can have about 4 chickens and no roosters. I am great of not having a rooster. So we are looking into what type is best around small children. Any advice is great. And on type of coop that we can buy instead of making. Thanks

Welcome to our flock!

Glad you could join BYC! Some good breeds for egg production that also have good temperaments are Black Sex-Links, Red Sex-Links, Australorps, Orpingtons, Wyandottes, Easter Eggers, and Sussex. All of those have reputations for being gentle and docile around children, especially if handled often as chicks. If egg production isn't a huge priority, you could get Cochins or Silkies. Those are very kid-friendly, too.

I've never bought a coop (only constructed ones), so I can't answer your next question. I do know that most pre-made coops that are sold are too small and overestimate the number of chickens that can fit in them. Keep in mind that each chicken usually needs 4 square feet of inside space and 10 square feet of run space. I suggest posting in the Coops section for some good answers as to where to get a coop: Coop & Run - Design, Construction, & Maintenance If you do decide to build, be sure to check out this section for lots of nice coop designs: Chicken Coop Plans

I also suggest taking a look at the Learning Center: Learning Center Articles It has lots of articles and information on all aspects of raising and keeping chickens.

If you can't find answers to questions, just ask! We'll be happy to help out in any way we can.

Good luck with your future flock of chickens.

For what it's worth I would purchase a small shed kit rather than a coop. You'll get a lot more space for your money and a more solid construction. You can usually find a wide variety at home improvement stores. The coop kits I've seen were all either too small or too expensive to suit my needs.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. Standard breeds that have a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle (potential lap pets) include Australorps, Orpingtons, Brahmas, Cochins, Sussex, and Faverolles. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breed you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Good info has been given from Wyandottes7 and Michael OShay.

I would recommend buff orpingtons. They are affectionate, friendly, docile and very friendly.

hi I've been having problems with my incubator going between 102 and 103 degrees ( is this ok )
