Hi ti all at BYC.
I have not had chickens for over 30 years and I have been wanting to get into it but I had to wait for the timing to be right. Long story short, two weeks ago we were visiting an organic farm in the east fork of Long Island and they had baby chicks. I think they were a couple of weeks old because the already had some of their wing and neck feathers.

I asked if they were sexed and I was told that they were. When later I emailed the farm owner she said that I probably have Cochins, Araucana, and maybe barred red. She also said that the white/Cochins were from a straight run and she offered to replace them in the event they ended up being roosters. I hope that we do not have to because I love all of them and it I'd real fun to hung out with them in our family room! I will post pictures below and you have any ideas please send them on!

Living in the NE imam concerned about the chicks getting cold when its time for them to go outside. My husband is putting final touches on an insulated coop with a red heat lamp and a heated waterer. Any suggestions on what age and what is the best way for me to introduce my little ones outdoors?

I am happy to have chickens back in my life and add them to our pet family of 3 dogs, 2 hedges, 1 tortoise, and a cockatiel!

Hello from Oregon & welcome to BYC. Congrats on the coop & the new chicks. 6 wks or fully feathered like Drumstick mentioned is a good time to introduce them to the outdoors :) Best of luck.

Those chicks look old enough to move outside now :-)

Once your chicks are 6 weeks of age, they no longer need a heat source. Overheating and too tightly sealed housing increase the risk of health issues. A well-ventilated, draft-free coop is all that is needed for your birds to stay healthy. I leave one window at least cracked open all winter, and the weather is bitterly cold here at times.
