Good Morning!!!
My name is Heather and I live in eastern South Dakota on a small acreage. I have 3 beautiful children (g-16, b-14, g-11) 2 yellow labs (Jake and Willow) a very spoiled pomeranian (Princess Mya) an indoor cat (suzy) and an outside cat (Baby) and one very patient and understanding HUSBAND!!! (he has to be to put up with me bringing animals home all the time...
I have been bugging my husband for chickens since we moved here 3 years ago. He finally said YES!!! So I came across this website while doing some research on raising chickens and have found a fountain of great information!!
I get my chicks this afternoon. My daughter who is a sophmore in highschool told me about how they are hatching eggs in biology (her teacher raises chickens) and she said that her teacher is allowing the kids to take some home as long as he talks to the parents. So that is where we are getting them from. He said that there are a mixture of breeds that hatched yesterday and today. The 3 he said are white leghorns, Americanas and barred rocks. So need to read up on those breeds.
I chose to raise chickens for eggs and a hobby. I am a stay at home mom and all my kids are in school and need something to occupy my time and I am a devoted animal lover. I am starting out small (3-4 chicks) so I can learn as I go and not get to over whelmed. If all goes well we will expand.
I have a great feeling that I will be spending A LOT of time here and can't wait to start sharing pictures and stories of my new "children"
