New Member and Looking to get ordinance changed in Ridley Township, PA

Please do let us know if you are successful. You might try a couple tiny serama pullets as house pets- they do well with confinement and were originally bred to be housepets in Malaysia. They could just as well be "exotic parrots" or something like that. They can work up to a good sized egg for hens so small.

I know this post is a few years old, but I am new-ish to Ridley Township and SUPER annoyed that I can not keep a small flock of hens here! I was wondering if you were able to make any headway on changing the ordinance or where attempts may have failed? I’m attempting to decide if I should try to start a movement towards allowing hens here or finding a new township to live lol

Sadly the author hasn't been here since Sept of last year. You can try pming her to see what she ran into or accomplished. There are a lot of stereotypical arguments against chickens that really don't make sense and are driven by ignorant people. There are also loop holes... Some situations prevent the ownership of chickens, but not the leasing or babysitting of them. and one can always keep them under cover... depending on neighbors. Another place you can look to for support is the Farm to Consumer Legal defense fund. They are working with state legislators to prevent municipalities from prohibiting wholesome food from being grown on one's own land.

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've decided to join us:ya

Thank you
I am actually a leader for our local 4-H so I always have access to chickens (along with lots of other livestock), but I miss having my own little flock in the family.
Where we used to live, the neighbors didn’t really care what we did, so even though it was illegal ... we kept both chickens and ducks in our yard for eggs and meat. It’s a GREAT experience for our kids and I am a HUGE advocate of homesteading and growing as much of your own food as you can. Unfortunately work keeps me close to the city and far from the farms where I long to be!!
One day I’ll have my own little farmette again!!! One day

I know that it has been a while since anyone has commented here, but I am looking to continue in the work of trying to get backyard birds legal in Ridley Township. I’m going to look into getting a petition together and other things in hopes to makes this thing a reality.

Welcome to the coop! I use the Forums and Articles tabs at the top of the page to do research. You can get lost for hours. It's nice to know you are minutes away from getting help with questions and emergencies! I always check in the "What's New" section as well at the top of this page. This way I can read how I may have a similar question or help give some advice.
