Hello
1f603.png
my name is debbie!

I would like to share my wonderful story about ducks

It all started two years ago where I managed to convince my boyfriend (mark) to get a little duck.

After a long Saturday researching and hunting for where to buy ducklings from we found two call ducklings 11 days old and completely yellow. Exactly what I wanted

We brought theses little fluff balls home

Me and mark have named them daffy and puddles..

We sat with them every night because we wanted to make sure they liked us I guess, and they do

I hope! Lol

Completely 100% certain that we had a boy and girl because they were completely different to one another we soon realised that they wasn't when both their tail feathers curled up.

When spring came round my ankles became their number one enemy

I was getting attacked.. Me being me I didn't even realise that they was "horny" I thought they didn't like me anymore..

Mark researched and read on here "back yard chickens" that they wanted to mate as it was matting season.

Now we need to get some girl ducks, it had to be two as it wasn't fair to make them share a lady lol

We brought home daisy and pickle

11 months on and both girls have been laying eggs
1f600.png

We let them hatch the eggs and out of 24 eggs one little baby duck hatched on a Sunday afternoon..

But sadly they little fella never made it through the first night

mark found it the next morning.

Not expecting anymore eggs this year from the girls, to our surprise they layed another 20 between them

I was so excited to have a little duckling again, mark and everybody kept telling me to not get excited not yet because the first duckling never made it..

We brought an incubator so we could try and hatch them ourselves, we had 17 eggs in the incubator and left 3 outside with the girls.

One egg from outside wasn't fertile and the other two have hatched and are 5 weeks old

All 17 eggs hatched in the incubator!! This was not expected we are all still shocked lol

One of the eggs was struggling and seemed to be taking a lot longer than the first few before it..

Me and mark.. Mainly mark helped the duckling out of the shell. Very risky as I know it's supposed to get out alone. But we thought we would rather help it out and try to give it a life than watch it die in the shell.

He or she was a week old when it died
1f614.png
we don't know why it died but i don't regret helping it out as I think it wouldn't of got out on its own.

The only small problem we have had with the ducklings is we noticed one has a swollen eye and couldn't open it, a quick trip to the vets with a weeks worth of drops 3 times a day along with bathing the eye (very difficult) the lovely Popeye is better now

Bringing my story to an end..

We have 4 adult call ducks and 18 ducklings!!

They are all beautiful with wonderful colours

Welcome to BYC! I'm a chicken person and don't know much about ducks (even though I've had a few), but I have to admit that ducklings are the ultimate in cute. Good luck with your ducklings.

Thank you everyone for your welcomes

I am hoping that this is how you reply to everyone..

I would love some chickens but I am thinking 22 ducks is enough for now lol

Does anybody know how you can sex a duck without having to wait to see if their tail feather curls up?

I have heard that a female and male have different quacks I can notice it in my big ducks but the little ones aren't quacking just yet.

Thank you
