I guess it's time to introduce myself. I've been a member for a little while and a chicken owner for about as long. We started out with 4 Rhode Island Red pullets and unfortunately our dog turned out to be quite the chicken killer so now we have 2 and we recent added 2 new ones 1 araucana and 1 amauraucana. I can't wait till they start laying eggs.

Welcome to BYC!

So sorry about the dog attack. Dogs and chickens don't go together. Most dogs see chickens as dinner.

Make yourself at home here on BYC and if you have any questions, that is what we are here for. I know it is hard to wait for those eggs to start coming, but it will be well worth the wait! Welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about the chicks you lost, good luck with the rest of your flock and hope the eggs show up soon!

Welcome to BYC! I also experienced what you are going thru, my dog killed my entire flock. I recommend that you keep them totally separate....best of luck to you.

I've got a a large belgian melanois shepherd that is tied next to the coop and she does not seem to want anything to do with the pullets but my little yorkie who is always at my wife's heel snuck past her the other day into the coop where our mature hens are and immediately attacked one.
He was able to tear her comb and drew blood but she fought him off long enough to buy me some time to grab him by the scruff.

Needless to say he got a good spanking and he spent the next two days fairly depressed and withdrawn......little stinker.

He's the best little dog in the world but sometimes he can be a real jerk when it comes to certain dogs and other animals.
