Hello! I have been a chicken momma for just over 5 years. I started with a flock of 4 (per city regulations), lost one last summer due to unknown circumstances, and have just added 5 more for a total of 8 (yep- well aware of the aforementioned city regulations... but honestly, 4 hens do not produce enough eggs for this family of 5). The old biddies are a white Plymouth Rock, a Buff Orp, and a Black Laced Wyandotte. The noobs are a RIR, 2 Ameraucanas, a midnight Marans, and a Sapphire Gem. I also have 3 kids ages 8, 6, and 5, with 2 cats ages 1 and 2, one hubby whose age is not disclosed and a wonderful garden where chickens can roam (with much fencing, of course). Up until a month ago we had a solid blue healer/beagle mix that was the perfect dog for a first-time chicken owner (RIP Porter). I have always used BYC for answers to questions and I’m happy to have finally signed up as a member. Oh, and in case one might wonder if my neighbors might not be happy with the number of chickens I have, I will remind them of the 6 tiny and obnoxiously loud dogs they have as I hand over a dozen eggs to win their hearts.
