Hi Everyone! I've thought about getting chickens off and on for a while, and I think this spring we're just going to do it. So I'm on here learning whatever I can before we get started.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I grew up on a farm and we had chickens, but we never really did anything to "raise" them, just like farm cats, they found their own food and the smart ones stayed alive. I'll be having "city chickens" obviously, so it will be a little more hands-on than our farm chickens were when I was a kid.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Zero

(3) What breeds do you have?
I'm thinking about getting: 2 Easter Eggers, 1 Speckled Sussex, 1 Silver Cuckoo Marans
(I really like the "cool" chickens like Silkies, Polish, Sultan, but I don't think I'll get those right now because I want eggs and living in the city I only have room for a few chickens.)

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Google search

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I have 3 dogs, 2 papillons and a shelter mutt (pomeranian/schipperke mix we think). One of the papillons I show in AKC conformation. I enjoy cooking and eating, especially various ethnic cuisines (Ethiopian is my favorite!).

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I got married this summer to the man that I met in college and I've been dating for the past 7 years, very happy about that

. That's also another reason we want to get chickens, we'll probably start a family soon and I think it's really important for kids to know how to act around animals and where their food comes from. I already mentioned my pets. I work as a web developer for a children's hospital.
