Converting a shed is a wonderful idea. You also might want to look on Craig's List to see if you can buy a used shed or coop for your conversion. But, don't totally discount the idea of building your own. It's really not as difficult as one might think. I'm a 61 y.o. biddy, and love a building project. Check out this book.

It makes the planning and building look very easy and straight forward. If you have the basic power tools, and can use them, you can build a coop!

Hi ChickenGirl555,
I just took a look at the "learning center". Thanks for the link!:) I'll be sure to take a look at the breeder you recommended also. I should actually be doing more research on getting my yard set up, since I won't be able to set up my coop until I get that done, but it's difficult since I find this much more interesting.

Yeah, just remember ventilation like many people have said, and that you have enough room for the amount you want. That site I gave you the link to also sells some good coops that are already the size for certain amounts of chickens.
How many are you thinking?

I'm thinking that I will start with 4 hens then possibly add a rooster (for entertainment). I would just need to find one that isn't too terribly noisy. I'm guessing that I might eventually end up with a few more later especially if I have a rooster.

Thanks for the link! I will check it out. I'm not sure if I will end up actually building one but you never know.

Welcome! I started with a very few bantams from a neighbor, and somehow now reduce my flock to about 40 for winter! 'Chicken math' is a very real 'disease'!
Make sure that your neighborhood is zoned for livestock/ chickens, and how many, and roosters. BEFORE you get them!
A modified garden shed works very well, and do look at the Woods coop designs too. It's so good to plan and build first, rather than after the chicks arrive!

I did check my zoning and even called the city code enforcement number. There isn't any limit on the number of chickens that you can have and you can also have roosters. I was actually confused for a while because the information on the Chicken laws in this forum said that roosters aren't allowed in Reno so I was sad that I wouldn't be able to have one. But from what I have learned there aren't any limits to hens or roosters. I probably won't have more than one rooster though since I don't want my neighbors to become my enemies. I will try to keep in control of myself so I don't end up with way too many chickens.:)
