hello and hi from south Georgia:

my name is leesa and this will be my first attempt at raising chickens for egg purposes.

my g'son, age 5, decided he wants a farm with chickens, so since i cant give him a farm, ah, the next best thing is a chicken coup in my fenced in backyard which will sit next to my g'son 192 sq foot garden.

so my questions are:

1. for south Georgia, what is the best type/kind of chick to buy( i am looking at only 4 to 6 chickens to start with) and i prefer not to have lots of monies into my first attempt

2. chicken coup, i need a very economical one, where is best place to get instructions from?

i was giving this site and i am reading but any info i can get would be greatly appriecated

As for your area im not sure. BUT if you want eggs.. I would suggets Australorp. they are gentle and super brown egg producers!!!
Road island Red a a very good bird too. eggs and meat!

For the coop... please look at the coop pages on here. They have alot of great stuff! Check out craigs list or your local free paper. You can build a coop from almost anything. Free stuff is always great!!! I would build the coop 4 squar feet per bird and the run 10 squar feet per bird. This is the absolute minimum that they need to be happy, healthy, and productive. Enjoy your new chickens!!! They are very addictive!! BEWARE!! LOL

from Ohio. You have come to the right place. If you don't want any roos, I would order from a hatchery that will sex the birds for you. Good luck.

Welcome! For me the cheapest part of getting into chickens was the chickens themselves! The most expensive part will probably be the coop. There are some really great ideas on here. Good luck and enjoy
