In the Brooder
Hello from Harrisburg-ish, PA
My family of 5 is starting our first backyard flock. Our chicks just came this past Thursday and all seem to be doing well so far.
We have 18 barred rock chicks, opted for all female so we'll see how accurate that was soon enough.
We have about a quarter acre and fenced yard, our intention is to let the birds free-range about the yard during the day and come to the coop (still in progress, picture attached) at night time.
We are hoping to supply our family, friends and neighbors with fresh eggs and, if need be, meat.
We selected barred rock as I was showing a home around Danville, PA (I'm a licensed Realtor) and the sellers had a flock of about 20 barred rocks. The flock approached us and followed us everywhere along the outside part of the tour and I couldn't get over how friendly and docile they were, reminded me almost of well trained dogs lol.
We do have a mixed breed dog (lab/rhodesian ridgeback), about 6 years old who is great with our kids and has shown some interest in the chicks already. I don't worry about him being a good protector of the flock.
I came across this site and forum from a Reddit group post and I know I'll need some help along the way to get this flock to egg laying age and beyond.
